If you live in or drive through Carlisle, PA, big changes are on the horizon—good ones! Starting in March and May of 2025, two major infrastructure projects will launch, bringing overdue upgrades to key roads and intersections in Carlisle Borough and Middlesex Township.

These efforts aren’t just about fixing potholes or laying fresh pavement—they’re part of a larger vision to make Cumberland County safer, more efficient, and more connected for everyone, whether you walk, drive, or bike.

Let’s break down what’s coming.

🛣 1. The Carlisle Connectivity Project (Begins May 20, 2025)

The Carlisle Connectivity Project is a wide-ranging initiative designed to improve traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and the overall look and feel of some of Carlisle’s busiest streets.

This is the final phase of a multi-year improvement plan, and it focuses on the northern area of the borough, with major upgrades coming to Route 11 (Hanover Street) and Route 34 (Carlisle Springs Road).

Key Highlights:

  • 🚶 Streetscape Improvements: Expect safer sidewalks, decorative lighting, landscaping, and more walkable roads on Route 11 and Route 34.

  • 🌀 A New Five-Point Roundabout: This much-needed roundabout will be built where Route 11, Fairground Avenue, and Penn Street all meet. It’s a tricky intersection, and the new design will help ease congestion and reduce crash risks.

  • 🚦 Intersection Realignment: The intersection of Route 11 and Route 34 will be rebuilt at a cleaner 90-degree angle and equipped with a modern traffic signal for smoother navigation.

  • 🌧 Drainage Upgrades: Stormwater issues will be addressed with updated systems to reduce flooding and improve reliability during heavy rains.

Construction Timeline:
May 20, 2025 – December 2025
Lane restrictions: Weekdays from 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM
Additional off-road work may happen during other hours with minimal impact.

This is more than a face-lift—it’s about building a safer, more accessible future for drivers, walkers, and cyclists.

🌉 2. Route 34 (Spring Road) Bridge Replacement – Middlesex Township (Begins March 4, 2025)

Just a few miles north of Carlisle, another important infrastructure update is happening in Middlesex Township. The Route 34 bridge over Spring Run, originally built in 1921, is finally being replaced.

Why it Matters:

  • The current bridge is nearly 104 years old and doesn’t meet today’s safety standards.

  • A precast concrete box culvert will replace it, providing a longer-lasting and more secure structure for daily traffic.

Traffic Plan:

  • One-lane traffic only during construction, controlled by temporary traffic signals.

  • Trucks will be rerouted via a 1-mile detour using Sheaffer Road and Wagner Drive.

  • Cars and passenger vehicles can still pass through the site.

Construction Timeline:
March 4, 2025 – November 18, 2025

🏗 More Than Just Roadwork — It’s an Investment in the Future

Both projects represent more than traffic control—they’re about creating a safer, more connected Cumberland County. From reducing backups and crashes to supporting local redevelopment and walkability, these upgrades will improve daily life for residents, business owners, and visitors alike.

They also pave the way (pun intended) for:

  • Smoother commutes 🚘

  • Safer routes for kids and families 🚶‍♂️

  • Modernized infrastructure that supports future growth 🏙

  • Better stormwater control during heavy rains ☔

🔄 What You Can Expect as a Resident or Commuter

  • Temporary lane closures and delays

  • Occasional detours and sidewalk closures

  • Ongoing communication from the Borough of Carlisle and PennDOT to keep the public informed

Be patient—these short-term disruptions are laying the foundation for long-term improvements.
